This bill aims to provide a second chance for individuals who have served in the National Guard or Reserves and were unable to complete the requirements for employment as police officers or firefighters due to their military service. Specifically, it allows those who have passed a civil service examination for these positions but could not fulfill other employment requirements because of active duty of at least 30 days, to have their names placed on a subsequent eligible list in order of their scores. This provision applies to service members who were active between September 11, 2001, and the termination of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that any individual who meets the maximum age requirement for the position at the closing date of the civil service examination will still be considered to have met that requirement when their name is placed on the new eligible list. This legislation is designed to ensure that military service does not hinder the employment opportunities of those who have served their country.
