This bill amends current law to eliminate the $15 fee for special license plates issued to firefighters and members of first aid or rescue squads in New Jersey. Previously, individuals in these roles could apply for a special plate, but they were required to pay an additional fee on top of the standard vehicle registration fees. The new legislation allows these individuals to obtain the special plates at no extra cost, while still requiring them to pay any standard registration fees.

Additionally, the bill stipulates that individuals who receive the special plates must renew them annually. As part of the renewal process, they must provide proof that they are still bona fide members of a fire department or first aid/rescue squad in the state. The bill aims to support and recognize the contributions of these emergency service members by reducing financial barriers associated with obtaining special recognition on their vehicles.
