The resolution commemorates the 71st anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War on July 27, 1953. It highlights the war's origins, beginning with the invasion of the Republic of Korea by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on June 25, 1950, and the subsequent involvement of the United Nations, which formed a coalition of 22 countries, including the United States, to support South Korea. The resolution notes the significant sacrifices made during the conflict, with over 1.7 million American soldiers serving, resulting in more than 33,000 American deaths and over 100,000 injuries, as well as the contributions of more than 191,000 New Jersey residents, of whom 836 were killed or missing in action.
The resolution also emphasizes the lasting impact of the Korean War, which resulted in approximately 2.5 million deaths and is often referred to as the "forgotten war" due to its relative lack of attention compared to other conflicts. It acknowledges the mutual defense treaty established between the United States and South Korea following the war, marking the formation of a significant alliance. The resolution calls for copies to be sent to the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and Korean War veteran associations in New Jersey, and it takes effect immediately.
