This bill mandates the Board of Public Utilities (BPU), in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Protection and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, to conduct a comprehensive study on the feasibility of developing advanced nuclear reactors across New Jersey. The BPU is required to submit a written report to the Governor and the Legislature within 18 months, detailing the feasibility, need, and design of a program for small modular or advanced reactors. The study will include an assessment of suitable locations for deployment, regulatory requirements, economic viability, safety precautions, environmental impacts, and public perception through stakeholder sessions.

Additionally, the bill outlines specific tasks for the BPU during the study, such as consulting with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, evaluating integration with existing energy infrastructure, and exploring funding opportunities through federal and state grants, private investments, and public-private partnerships. The act will take effect immediately and will expire 30 days after the BPU submits its report.
