This bill mandates the development of a student-athlete eating disorder awareness training program by the Commissioner of Education, in consultation with the Secretary of Higher Education and the Commissioner of Health. The program will cover various aspects of eating disorders, including types, risk factors, identification of symptoms, prevention strategies, available services, and protocols for connecting affected student-athletes with appropriate resources. The Commissioner is also tasked with updating the program as necessary and considering information from relevant athletic and mental health associations during its development.
Beginning with the first full school year or academic year after the program's establishment, coaches of middle school and high school interscholastic sports, cheerleading, dance programs, and collegiate sports, as well as athletic trainers employed by public schools and institutions of higher education, will be required to complete the training program. They must initially complete it within six months of the program's launch and then every two years thereafter. Newly appointed coaches and athletic trainers must complete the training within six months of their appointment. Additionally, each board of education and governing board of public institutions must adopt policies outlining the protocols to follow when a student-athlete is suspected of having an eating disorder.
