This bill mandates that public institutions of higher education provide an alternative scholarship to student-athletes who lose their athletic scholarships due to incapacitating injuries or illnesses. Specifically, if an athletic scholarship is rescinded or not renewed because of such an injury or illness, the institution is required to offer a scholarship equal in value to the original athletic scholarship. This alternative scholarship will be available for the duration of the student's enrollment in an undergraduate program or for a maximum of five academic years, whichever is shorter.
The bill also defines "incapacitating injury or illness" as one that is directly related to the student-athlete's participation in intercollegiate athletics and has been determined by the institution's medical staff to render the student-athlete medically ineligible to continue in their sport. Additionally, it clarifies that a "student-athlete" refers to an undergraduate student involved in intercollegiate athletics at a public institution. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
