This bill mandates that all students in grades six through 12, whether in public or nonpublic schools, must undergo a physical examination that includes a cardiac component, utilizing the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form. The examination must be conducted by a licensed physician, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant who is required to sign a certification statement confirming their completion of a professional development module related to student-athlete cardiac screening. Schools are responsible for retaining this signed statement to verify the qualifications of the health care practitioner performing the examination.

Additionally, the bill reiterates that students in grades six through 12 who participate in school-sponsored interscholastic or intramural athletic teams must comply with these physical examination requirements in accordance with existing laws. The act is set to take effect immediately and will first apply to the 2023-2024 school year.
