This bill establishes a legislative internship program that allows members of the New Jersey Legislature to employ interns, contingent upon approval from the presiding officer of their respective House. The program is open to both full-time and part-time students enrolled in accredited higher education institutions, excluding those in juris doctorate and PhD programs. Priority for the internship will be given to New Jersey residents and students attending colleges within the state. Each intern is required to complete a work period in a legislator's district office, with the option for the legislator to retain the intern for an additional period if both parties agree.
Additionally, the bill allocates up to $10,000 annually for each legislator to employ interns and stipulates that interns will receive a stipend of $1,000 for each completed work period, which will be prorated and paid on a bi-weekly or monthly basis as determined by the legislator. To support this initiative, the bill appropriates $1,200,000 from the State General Fund to the New Jersey Legislature for the internship program's implementation. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
