This bill amends the existing Volunteer Tuition Credit Program to expand eligibility to active members of volunteer fire companies and volunteer first aid or rescue squads, as well as their dependent children and spouses, allowing them to enroll in four-year public institutions of higher education. The bill increases the maximum annual tuition credit from $600 to $1,000, raising the total maximum tuition credit from $2,400 to $4,000 over a four-year service period. Additionally, it includes county technical institutes in the list of eligible educational institutions.

The amendments also stipulate that in order to receive the tuition credit, volunteers must agree to serve for a minimum of four years and sign an agreement with their municipality. Verification of service and academic performance, specifically maintaining a "C" grade average, is required to continue eligibility for the program. The changes aim to enhance support for volunteers and their families pursuing higher education while recognizing their commitment to community service.
