This bill allows high school students in grades 11 and 12 in New Jersey to have up to three excused absences per school year for participating in college visits, visits to postsecondary technical institutions, and military recruitment-related activities. It stipulates that if a student is absent for military recruitment purposes, that absence will also be recorded as excused. Importantly, these excused absences will not appear on transcripts or other official documents, and they will not affect a student's perfect attendance record for the year.
Additionally, the bill defines "military recruitment-related activity" as any requirement set by the Armed Forces or National Guard necessary for enlistment, which includes testing, medical evaluations, interviews, and fingerprinting. Students must provide documentation as deemed necessary by the school superintendent or principal to validate their eligibility for these excused absences. The bill is set to take effect in the first full school year following its enactment.
