This bill mandates the creation of special license plates for qualified disabled veterans in New Jersey, allowing them to park in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities. A "disabled veteran" is defined as a resident certified by the federal Department of Veterans Affairs with a service-connected disability that limits their ability to walk, as verified by a licensed medical professional. The Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is responsible for issuing these license plates, which will feature the words "Disabled Veteran" and a wheelchair symbol, upon a $15 application fee. The plates are non-transferable and exclusively for the use of the individual to whom they are issued.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that holders of these special license plates are not required to obtain a separate disability identification card or any other special plates or placards to utilize designated parking spaces. However, misuse of the privileges associated with the license plate can lead to revocation of benefits and forfeiture of the plate. The bill is set to take effect six months after its enactment, with provisions for the Chief Administrator to take necessary actions for timely implementation.
