This bill establishes a new disqualification for individuals seeking to obtain or maintain a school bus endorsement in New Jersey. Specifically, it prohibits a person from obtaining a school bus endorsement for one year following their last conviction if they have accumulated four or more current motor vehicle points due to violations of motor vehicle laws. This is a change from the current law, which allows for disqualification only if a person has 12 or more points under the point system. Additionally, the bill mandates that the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission must notify the Commissioner of Education of any suspension of a school bus endorsement, who in turn must inform the relevant board of education or contractor.
Furthermore, individuals whose school bus endorsements have been suspended under this bill will be required to pass both a knowledge test and a skills test before they can be reissued a school bus endorsement after their suspension period. The bill is set to take effect immediately but will only apply to convictions that occur after its enactment.
