This bill amends N.J.S.11A:5-1 to expand the definition of "veteran" and "disabled veteran" for civil service purposes in New Jersey. It allows individuals who served in the active military of the Armed Forces of the United States and are discharged under conditions other than dishonorable to qualify as a veteran or disabled veteran if they meet the criteria outlined in the federal definition (5 U.S.C. s.2108) or the state definitions provided in subsections a. and b. of the law. The bill requires these individuals to present sufficient evidence of their service to the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and receive a determination of status no later than eight days prior to the issuance of an employment list for which they have passed an examination.

The legislation aims to broaden the eligibility for civil service hiring preferences for veterans, thereby increasing the number of individuals who can benefit from such preferences. Importantly, the bill does not alter the eligibility status of veterans who are currently recognized under existing law. The act is set to take effect immediately upon enactment.
