This bill mandates that all mental health practitioners in New Jersey complete suicide prevention training as a prerequisite for licensure and as an ongoing requirement throughout their careers. Specifically, it requires new applicants for licensure to complete a minimum of four hours of approved suicide prevention training and submit proof of completion to the relevant State Board of Examiners or Committee. Additionally, licensed practitioners must complete four hours of training every six years. Those already licensed as of the bill's effective date will need to complete the training within one year and continue the six-year cycle thereafter.

The bill defines "mental health practitioner" to include various licensed professionals such as clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and psychologists, among others. It also outlines what constitutes "suicide prevention training," which must be approved by the Division of Consumer Affairs in the Department of Law and Public Safety. Furthermore, the Director of the Division is tasked with creating a list of approved training programs and establishing a protocol for training providers to seek approval.
