This bill establishes the Domestic Violence Shelter Pet Grant Program within the Department of Human Services to provide financial support for domestic violence shelters that allow victims to keep their pets with them during their stay. The program aims to cover costs associated with the care of these pets, including food, medication, toys, and veterinary services. To qualify for funding, shelters must submit an application to the Commissioner of Human Services, who will prioritize grants based on the number of pets housed. Each qualifying shelter can receive grants up to $50,000.

Additionally, the bill appropriates $1,000,000 from the General Fund to support the program's implementation. The Commissioner is also granted the authority to adopt necessary regulations to facilitate the program's operation, which will be effective for a limited period before undergoing further amendment or adoption. This initiative seeks to enhance the well-being of both domestic violence victims and their pets by ensuring they can remain together during a critical time.
