This bill mandates that all washing machines sold in New Jersey on or after January 1, 2030, must include a microfiber filtration system designed to capture microfibers and microplastics, with a mesh size not greater than 100 micrometers. Additionally, these machines must display a conspicuous label informing consumers about the filter and the need to regularly check and dispose of captured lint properly. The intent of this legislation is to mitigate the environmental impact of microplastic pollution, which poses risks to marine life and human health.

To enforce compliance, the bill establishes civil penalties for violations, with fines of up to $10,000 for a first offense and up to $30,000 for subsequent offenses, to be collected by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Furthermore, the DEP is tasked with adopting necessary regulations within one year of the bill's effective date to ensure its implementation.
