The Authentic Relationships Act establishes regulations surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) relationship simulations in New Jersey. The bill prohibits providers from designing, developing, marketing, or making available any AI that simulates intimate relationships, unless it is exclusively for legitimate medical purposes and does not encourage romantic or sexual interactions with humans. The Attorney General is granted the authority to investigate violations and impose civil penalties of up to $25,000 for each infraction. Additionally, individuals who experience emotional, financial, or relational harm due to violations can seek damages in court.
Furthermore, the bill makes it unlawful for providers to create AI relationship simulations with the intent to deceive users into believing they are interacting with a human. This legislation aims to protect public welfare by ensuring that genuine human relationships are not undermined by artificial simulations, reflecting the belief that true romantic love can only exist between people. The act is set to take effect 180 days after its enactment.
