The New Jersey Dialysis Patient Support Person Accommodation Act mandates that licensed dialysis centers allow patients receiving treatment to be accompanied by a designated support person. This support person is permitted to assist the patient with communication, mobility, and decision-making to enhance their care and treatment experience. While dialysis centers can implement reasonable health, safety, and infection control measures regarding the presence of support persons, these measures must not unnecessarily restrict or deny access to the designated individual.
Additionally, each dialysis center is required to develop and maintain written policies regarding support person access, which must be posted visibly within the facility and made available to patients and the public upon request. Staff at these centers must receive training on the act's requirements and the facility's policies. The Department of Health will oversee compliance, investigate complaints of violations, and impose penalties or corrective actions on non-compliant centers. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
