This bill mandates the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) to collect and publish specific statistical information regarding consumer debt lawsuits in New Jersey. The statistics to be compiled and reported annually include the number of new consumer debt lawsuits filed across various court divisions, the number of pending lawsuits for three months or more, the representation status of defendants, the number of judgments granted (including defaults), and other relevant data as deemed appropriate by the Administrative Director of the Courts in consultation with the Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs.

Currently, while the AOC provides monthly civil case statistics, these do not specifically categorize consumer debt collection cases. This bill aims to enhance transparency and understanding of consumer debt litigation, aligning with recommendations from the National Center for Access to Justice. By providing detailed statistics, the bill seeks to equip court personnel, lawmakers, and advocates with the necessary information to address issues related to consumer debt claims effectively. The act will take effect three months after its enactment, allowing for preparatory actions for its implementation.
