This bill allows for the probationary or temporary appointment of law enforcement officers as State or county investigators under specific conditions. It stipulates that a permanent law enforcement officer who has an active certification in the basic training course for police officers or State Police can be appointed for a maximum of 120 days to facilitate their training and certification as a basic investigator. During this probationary or temporary appointment, the officer is authorized to perform the duties of a permanently appointed investigator.
Additionally, upon successful completion of the probationary or temporary appointment, the officer may apply for licensure as a permanent investigator through the Police Training Commission. The bill ensures that the appointment remains valid until the commission makes a decision on the application for permanent licensure. The new legal language inserted into the current law clarifies these provisions and the conditions under which they apply.
