This bill mandates that each school district in New Jersey include age-appropriate instruction on lightning safety in their health education curriculum for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. This instruction is to be integrated as part of the districts' adherence to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. The curriculum must cover essential topics such as indoor and outdoor lightning safety tips, actions to take if someone is struck by lightning, common misconceptions about lightning, and the severe weather policies established by the school district.
Additionally, the bill allows for the incorporation of engaging learning activities, brochures, and toolkits provided by the National Weather Service or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to enhance the educational experience. This legislation is a response to recent tragic incidents involving lightning strikes that resulted in fatalities and injuries, highlighting the need for increased awareness and safety education regarding lightning. The act is set to take effect immediately and will first apply to the full school year following its enactment.
