This bill establishes a prohibition against law enforcement officers wearing masks or disguises while interacting with the public during the performance of their official duties. However, there are specific exceptions to this rule: officers may wear masks if they are engaged in undercover assignments, wearing a shield that does not conceal their face for protection, using a medical-grade mask or N95 respirator with a physician's statement for health reasons, or wearing a mask for protection against smoke during a State of Emergency.
Violations of this provision will result in the officer being charged with a disorderly persons offense, which carries penalties of a fine ranging from $500 to $1,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. The bill also provides a definition of a law enforcement officer, encompassing members of federal, state, county, or municipal law enforcement agencies who are authorized to enforce laws.
