The bill establishes a grant program within the New Jersey Department of Education (DOE) aimed at providing funding for public schools to purchase and install point-of-use filtered bottle-filling stations and filtered faucets. The Commissioner of Education is required to set up this program within 180 days of the bill's enactment, allowing schools to apply for grants based on a specified application process. Priority for these grants will be given to schools facing significant water quality issues, particularly those with elevated levels of lead and other contaminants, as well as those that have not yet installed such filtered systems.

Additionally, the bill mandates that the Commissioner may develop guidance to assist schools in planning the installation of these filtered systems within six months of enactment. A report on the program's implementation, including the number of grants applied for and awarded, is to be submitted to the Governor and the Legislature by six months after the end of the 2025-2026 school year. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
