The bill establishes a School Lead Filters program in New Jersey, aimed at improving water quality in public schools by providing grants for the purchase and installation of point-of-use filtered bottle-filling stations and filtered faucets. The Commissioner of Education is tasked with creating this program within 180 days of the bill's enactment, prioritizing schools that demonstrate significant water quality issues, such as elevated lead levels, and those that have not yet installed these filtration systems. The program will be advertised to public schools, and applications for grants will be accepted in a manner determined by the commissioner.
Additionally, the bill allows the commissioner to develop guidance for schools on the installation of these filtered systems within six months of enactment. A report on the program's implementation, including grant applications and awards, is required to be submitted to the Governor and Legislature by six months after the end of the 2025-2026 school year. The act is set to take effect immediately upon approval.
