The resolution designates the first Sunday in May of each year as Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service Day in New Jersey, honoring the sacrifice of volunteer and career firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. With over 35,000 firefighters serving in the state, this day recognizes their essential role in protecting lives and property, as well as their willingness to respond to emergencies at great personal risk. Between 1990 and 2024, approximately 145 on-duty firefighter fatalities were reported in New Jersey, underscoring the dangers they face.

On this day, the Governor will issue a proclamation encouraging public officials and citizens to observe the occasion with appropriate activities and programs. Additionally, all State and local government agencies are urged to fly the flags of the United States and New Jersey at half-staff to honor those firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. This resolution aims to ensure that the contributions and sacrifices of firefighters are formally recognized and commemorated each year.
