This bill establishes definitions and provisions related to mental health support for first responders in New Jersey. It defines critical incidents, first responders, law enforcement officers, mental health professionals, minors, and other relevant terms. The bill mandates that employers of first responders provide up to 12 hours of paid confidential counseling with a mental health professional for those who experience a critical incident during their employment. This counseling is in addition to any existing benefits and allows the first responder to choose their mental health professional. If further counseling is deemed necessary, employers are required to cover an additional 24 hours of licensed counseling.
Additionally, the bill ensures that interactions between law enforcement officers and resiliency program officers or peer support team members regarding mental health support remain confidential, with limited exceptions for situations involving potential harm or criminal activity. The provisions aim to enhance mental health resources for first responders, recognizing the unique challenges they face in their line of work. The act is set to take effect immediately upon approval.
