This bill mandates the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to enhance public access to information regarding electric power suppliers and gas suppliers by publishing relevant data on its website. The BPU is required to review the websites of public utility regulatory bodies in other states with deregulated energy sectors to identify the most user-friendly models. Within 90 days of this assessment, and quarterly thereafter, the BPU must provide information that is easy to understand and encourages customers to exercise their right to retail choice in selecting their energy suppliers. The information must be formatted similarly to the model state’s website and should educate the public on the benefits of retail choice.
Additionally, the bill establishes a public awareness campaign aimed at informing electric and gas utility customers about the advantages of retail choice and how to navigate the information available on the BPU's website. This initiative comes in response to low participation rates in retail choice among New Jersey residents, with only 6.2% of residential electric customers and 2.5% of residential gas customers currently utilizing electric power suppliers or gas suppliers. The goal of the bill is to improve public understanding and engagement with the options available to them in the energy market.
