This bill mandates the establishment of a senior citizens telephone chat-line by the Division of Aging Services within the Department of Human Services. The chat-line aims to connect older adults, particularly those feeling isolated or lonely, with volunteers who will provide emotional support through weekly phone calls. Individuals aged 60 and older, or their family members or guardians, can register to receive these calls by submitting a form that includes personal details such as their name, address, interests, hobbies, and preferred call times. Additionally, volunteers aged 18 and older must also register and provide similar information to facilitate effective matching with the seniors.
The bill emphasizes the importance of confidentiality, requiring the Division of Aging Services to protect the identities of both the seniors receiving calls and the volunteers, as well as the content of their conversations. Furthermore, the Department of Human Services is tasked with adopting necessary rules and regulations to implement the provisions of this act, which is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
