This bill establishes that minor league baseball players are exempt from certain provisions of the New Jersey State Wage and Hour Law and the recordkeeping requirements of the State wage payment law, provided they are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Minor League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association. The legislation recognizes the unique nature of minor league work and aims to respect the terms of the newly established collective bargaining agreement, which offers significant benefits such as salaries, health care, and housing to minor league players.
The exemption will only apply while the minor league players are compensated under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement and will not extend beyond its duration, although agreements can be renewed or renegotiated. Additionally, Minor League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association are required to inform the Department of Labor and Workforce Development about any changes to the collective bargaining agreement within one week. The act is set to take effect immediately and will remain in force as long as the qualifying collective bargaining agreement is in place.
