This bill amends existing New Jersey law to include coverage for the storage of sperm and oocytes for covered individuals up to 21 years of age as part of standard fertility preservation services. These services are mandated when a medically necessary treatment may lead to iatrogenic infertility, which is defined as infertility caused by medical interventions such as surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. The bill applies to various health insurance providers, including hospital service corporations, medical service corporations, health service corporations, and health maintenance organizations, specifically for groups with more than 50 persons.
Additionally, the bill ensures that coverage for these fertility preservation services is provided under the same terms as other medical conditions, meaning that the same copayments, deductibles, and benefit limits will apply. It also prohibits insurers from denying coverage based on personal characteristics or health conditions. The act is set to take effect four months after its enactment and will apply to contracts and policies issued or renewed after that date.
