This bill mandates that all hospitals in New Jersey adopt, develop, and submit an environmental sustainability plan to the Department of Health every four years. The plan must outline goals for transitioning to high-performance and sustainable operations, efficient use of natural resources, and consideration of the hospital's environmental impact. Newly licensed hospitals are required to submit their plans within six months of obtaining their license. The bill specifies various focus areas for the sustainability plans, including the establishment of Green Teams, sustainable purchasing strategies, water conservation efforts, and initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.

Additionally, each hospital is required to provide an annual progress report on the implementation of their sustainability plan to the Commissioner of Health by January 15 each year, with the report published on the Department's website. The Commissioner may also create a Sustainability in Health Care Facilities Advisory Committee to assist in reviewing the submitted plans. This legislation aims to enhance the sustainability of healthcare facilities in New Jersey, addressing the significant environmental impact of the healthcare sector and promoting resilience in health systems.
