This bill mandates the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to create and implement a public information campaign aimed at educating customers of electric, gas, and water public utilities about the inspection and calibration of utility meters. The campaign will cover essential topics such as the requirements and procedures for meter calibration, the frequency of testing, authorized entities for calibration, and the process for disputing meter readings or utility bills. Additionally, it will inform customers about the availability of independent verification of meter accuracy and any other relevant information deemed necessary by the BPU.

The public information campaign will utilize various methods for dissemination, including the preparation and distribution of materials through the BPU and utility websites, booklets, and pamphlets, ensuring accessibility in both English and Spanish. Furthermore, the BPU will establish a toll-free telephone number for customers to seek additional information or assistance regarding their utility meters and billing disputes. The bill also allows the BPU to adopt necessary rules and regulations for its implementation, with an immediate effective date upon enactment.
