The bill establishes June of each year as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in New Jersey, recognizing the diverse identities within the LGBTQIA+ community, including but not limited to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, nonbinary individuals, and others whose identities may not be fully captured by existing terminology. The legislation aims to promote awareness and acceptance of LGBTQIA+ individuals, acknowledging their historical persecution and contributions to society.
Additionally, the bill requests that the Governor issue an annual proclamation encouraging public officials and citizens to observe LGBTQIA+ Pride Month through appropriate activities and programs. This initiative aligns with New Jersey's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in light of recent federal actions that have sought to diminish recognition of such identities and observances. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
