The bill establishes a three-year Gun Court Pilot Program in the Superior Court of Passaic County, aimed at addressing the increasing peril posed by gun-related violent crimes. The program will be administered by the Administrative Office of the Courts, which will have the authority to refer any criminal case involving a gun or other dangerous weapon to the Gun Court. Judges assigned to this specialized court will possess extensive knowledge and experience in criminal law, particularly concerning violent crimes. Decisions made by the Gun Court will be binding, with the option for appeal to the Appellate Division of the Superior Court.

Additionally, the Administrative Office of the Courts is tasked with monitoring the Gun Court and providing reports to the Legislature at specified intervals—12 months after the program's initiation and within six months following its conclusion. These reports will assess the impact of the pilot program on criminal sentencing, court calendars, and workloads, as well as evaluate its overall effectiveness and make recommendations regarding its continuation or expansion. The bill is set to take effect three months after enactment and will expire three years thereafter.
