This bill mandates that school districts in New Jersey must arrange for and maintain student accident insurance, as well as pay the premiums for such policies. The insurance is intended to cover bodily injuries sustained by students while participating in interscholastic athletics programs, intramural sports programs, and other curricular or extracurricular activities. The bill amends existing law to remove the option for school districts to require parents or guardians to contribute to the insurance premiums, thereby placing the full financial responsibility on the school districts.

Additionally, the bill repeals N.J.S.18A:43-2, which previously allowed for parental contribution to insurance costs. The intent behind this legislation is to ensure that all students participating in school-sponsored activities are adequately protected against the financial burden of medical expenses resulting from injuries, thereby reinforcing the responsibility of school districts to safeguard their students' well-being. The act is set to take effect immediately and will apply to the first full school year following its enactment.
