This bill amends existing law to impose locational restrictions on the construction of new crematories in New Jersey. Specifically, it stipulates that a crematory must be situated on dedicated cemetery property and cannot be exclusively devoted to the operation of a crematory or the disposition of cremated remains. Additionally, the bill clarifies that these restrictions do not apply to crematoriums operated in conjunction with funeral homes.

Furthermore, the bill establishes that, effective immediately upon enactment, the New Jersey Cemetery Board is prohibited from approving applications for the construction of a crematory if the proposed site is within 1,000 feet of certain locations. These include public and private schools, areas zoned for residential use, and various recreational areas such as parks and beaches. This legislation aims to ensure that crematories are not located in close proximity to sensitive community areas.
