This bill establishes a legislative internship program specifically for veterans, aimed at creating employment opportunities in the public policy field. Members of the Legislature must obtain approval from the presiding officer of their respective House before hiring a veteran intern. Eligible applicants must be honorably discharged veterans who have been released from active duty within the last five years, hold a pay grade of E-5 or O-3 or lower, and possess a minimum 20 percent service-connected disability rating, unless they are Purple Heart recipients. New Jersey residents will be given priority in the application process, while veterans with a 20-year or Temporary Early Retirement Authorization retirement are excluded from eligibility.
Participants in the program will complete a work period in a legislator's district office, with the possibility of extending their internship if both the legislator and the participant agree. The interns will perform various legislative services as directed by the legislator, providing them with a comprehensive experience in legislative activities. The bill also mandates that the Legislature, with assistance from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, seek federal grant funds to support the program and ensures that necessary state funds are appropriated for its implementation. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
