This bill amends current New Jersey law to provide indemnity to firearm retail dealers who engage in state-sponsored suicide prevention efforts. It builds upon existing provisions that require these dealers to participate in a training course on recognizing suicidal tendencies and to distribute informational materials aimed at preventing access to firearms by individuals in crisis. The training course, developed by the Attorney General in consultation with the Commissioner of Health, includes strategies for suicide intervention and information about community services.
A key addition in this bill is the insertion of a clause that states a person cannot bring a cause of action for any loss or damages resulting from a firearm retail dealer's participation in the training or distribution of materials, unless such loss or damages are due to willful or wanton misconduct. This provision aims to encourage firearm dealers to actively participate in suicide prevention initiatives without the fear of legal repercussions for their good faith efforts. The bill is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
