This bill amends current law to enhance the legal protections for firearm retail dealers in New Jersey who engage in state-sponsored suicide prevention efforts. It establishes that these dealers, who sell firearms or operate firing ranges, can participate in a training course developed by the Attorney General in consultation with the Commissioner of Health. The training will cover recognizing signs of suicidal tendencies, intervention strategies, and information on community services. Additionally, dealers are required to distribute informational materials that advise customers on preventing firearm access for individuals in crisis.

A significant addition to the law is the provision that protects firearm retail dealers from legal liability for any loss or damages resulting from their participation in the training or distribution of materials, unless such damages are due to willful or wanton misconduct. This indemnity aims to encourage more dealers to take part in suicide prevention initiatives without the fear of legal repercussions. The bill is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
