This bill mandates that law enforcement officers in New Jersey receive cancer and cardiovascular disease screenings every three years, starting three years after their employment begins. The screenings will cover various types of cancers, including colon, lung, bladder, and prostate, among others. To support this initiative, the bill establishes the SHBP Law Enforcement Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Screenings Fund, which will be funded by a $10 surcharge added to motor vehicle fines and penalties. Additionally, public employers that do not participate in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) will be reimbursed up to $2,500 for the cost of these screenings for their law enforcement employees.
Furthermore, the bill appropriates $20 million from the State General Fund to support the screenings and the fund. It ensures that no co-payments or out-of-pocket expenses will be required from the officers for these examinations. The bill is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, and aims to enhance the health and well-being of law enforcement personnel by providing necessary medical screenings.
