The proposed legislation establishes the "Ethnic Produce Task Force" within the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, consisting of nine members appointed by various state officials. The Governor will appoint five members, including representatives from the New Jersey Restaurant and Hospitality Association, the New Jersey Farm Bureau, the State Board of Agriculture, and the food processing industry. The President of the Senate and the Speaker of the General Assembly will each appoint two members, ensuring representation from farmers and retail grocery stores. The Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a chairperson, and the task force will also elect a vice-chairperson. Members will serve without compensation, and the task force is required to meet at least three times and fill any vacancies in the same manner as original appointments.
Within one year of a majority of its members being appointed, the task force is tasked with studying the demand for ethnic produce in New Jersey, identifying which types can be grown locally, and determining businesses that require such produce. Additionally, the task force will promote the benefits of using locally grown ethnic produce, develop strategies to boost sales and consumption, and provide recommendations to farmers. A report detailing these findings and recommendations will be submitted to the Secretary of Agriculture and shared with the Legislature. The act will take effect immediately and will expire 30 days after the report is submitted.
