This bill mandates that school districts in New Jersey provide instruction on the risks associated with social media and cell phone addiction for students in grades 6 through 12. It amends current law, which only requires instruction on the responsible use of social media for grades 6 through 8 as part of the technology education curriculum. The new requirements will be implemented as part of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education, rather than the previous Core Curriculum Content Standards in Technology.

The instruction will cover various topics, including the responsible use of social media and cell phones, cyber safety, and the potential negative consequences of irresponsible use, such as cyberbullying and addiction. Additionally, it will address the impact of social media and cell phone addiction on students' mental health, personal relationships, and personal development. The Commissioner of Education is tasked with providing school districts with resources and sample learning activities to support this initiative.
