This bill mandates that school districts in New Jersey incorporate instruction on artificial intelligence (AI) into the curriculum for students in grades K-12, aligning with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Computer Science and Design Thinking. The instruction must cover general AI concepts, foundational skills for AI users, and best practices for the responsible and ethical use of AI. Additionally, the Commissioner of Education is tasked with providing age-appropriate sample learning activities and resources to assist in implementing this requirement.
Furthermore, the bill requires public institutions of higher education to offer certificate and degree programs in artificial intelligence. The Secretary of Higher Education, in collaboration with various state education and workforce development entities, will develop model curricula for both four-year institutions and county colleges. These curricula will ensure academic quality and compliance with accreditation standards, detailing course sequences, requirements, and expected student outcomes. The Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Economic Development Authority will also create marketing materials to promote AI career pathways to students.
