This bill establishes the Task Force on Student Mental Health, which aims to examine and address mental health issues among public school students, including conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. The task force will consist of 16 members, including key officials from the education and mental health sectors, public members with expertise in relevant areas, and various representatives from the public school system, such as teachers, counselors, and parents. The task force is tasked with developing recommendations to ensure students have access to necessary mental health care programs and services to support their educational goals.
The task force will study several critical areas, including the identification of students facing mental health challenges, the evaluation and expansion of existing counseling services, the connection between student mental health and school safety, and the funding needed for effective mental health programs. Additionally, it will look into successful programs implemented in other states. The task force is required to submit a final report of its findings and recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature within one year of its formation, after which it will dissolve 30 days following the report's issuance.
