This bill amends R.S.53:1-9 to extend the maximum age for appointment to the New Jersey State Police for applicants with prior military service. Currently, individuals must be between the ages of 21 and 35 to be eligible for appointment. The new provision allows for the maximum age of 35 to be extended by one year for each year of active duty military service in any branch of the Armed Forces, up to a maximum extension of six years.

The intent of the bill is to increase opportunities for veterans, recognizing the valuable experience they gain from military service, which can make them well-suited for public service roles. By allowing older veterans to apply, the bill aims to enhance the recruitment of qualified candidates into the State Police, ultimately benefiting both the veterans and the State. The bill is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
