This bill mandates the Department of Children and Families (DCF) to enhance the NJ Statewide Student Support Services program by incorporating services focused on eating disorder awareness, prevention, and counseling. It requires regional hubs, which are contracted by the DCF, to conduct community-based needs assessments to evaluate the availability and effectiveness of services related to the treatment and prevention of eating disorders for students in grades K-12. The assessments will be carried out in consultation with an Advisory Group and will inform the development of policies and procedures to ensure that appropriate services are provided to students.

The bill outlines that the policies and procedures must include guidelines for delivering these services according to a tiered system, which categorizes services into three levels: Tier 1 (universal supports), Tier 2 (targeted interventions), and Tier 3 (individualized clinical interventions). The DCF is also tasked with adopting necessary rules and regulations to implement the act effectively. The act is set to take effect three months after its enactment, although the Commissioner of Children and Families may initiate preparatory actions beforehand.
