This bill mandates the development of a student-athlete eating disorder awareness training program by the Commissioner of Education, in consultation with the Secretary of Higher Education and the Commissioner of Health. The program will cover various aspects of eating disorders, including types, risk factors, identification of symptoms, prevention strategies, available services, and protocols for connecting affected student-athletes with appropriate resources. The training program must be updated as necessary to reflect current information and will be required for coaches of interscholastic sports, cheerleading, dance programs, and collegiate sports, as well as athletic trainers employed by public schools and institutions of higher education.

Beginning with the first full school year or academic year after the program's establishment, all relevant coaches and athletic trainers must complete the training within six months of their appointment and subsequently every two years. Additionally, each board of education and governing board of public institutions of higher education is required to adopt a policy outlining the procedures to follow when a student-athlete is suspected of having an eating disorder, including notifying parents or guardians and connecting the student with appropriate services. The bill aims to enhance awareness and prevention of eating disorders among student-athletes, ensuring that those in coaching and training positions are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources.
