This bill mandates that the prosecutor of each county in New Jersey collect, record, and report data to the Attorney General regarding crimes involving the use of firearms that did not result in bodily injury. The required information includes details such as the complaint number, date and time of the incident, location, statutory citation and degree of offenses charged, and whether the firearm was used lawfully or unlawfully. This reporting obligation applies to all criminal complaints, regardless of the outcome of the case.
Starting January 1 following the bill's enactment, county prosecutors must submit this data to the Attorney General on a quarterly basis for three years. At the conclusion of this period, the Attorney General is tasked with compiling the collected information into a report for the Governor and the Legislature, which will also be published on the Department of Law and Public Safety's website.
