This bill mandates that county prosecutors in New Jersey collect, record, and report data to the Attorney General regarding firearm-related incidents that do not result in bodily injury. The required information includes details such as the complaint number, date and time of the incident, location, statutory citations, and whether the firearm was used lawfully or unlawfully. This data must be submitted quarterly for five years, starting from January 1 following the bill's effective date, regardless of the prosecution status of the cases.
At the conclusion of the five-year reporting period, the Attorney General is required to compile the collected data into a report for the Governor and the Legislature, which will also be made available on the Department of Law and Public Safety's website. This legislation is in response to a recommendation from the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation's report on illegal firearms use and trends, aiming to enhance the understanding and tracking of firearm-related incidents in the state.
