This bill mandates that county prosecutors in New Jersey collect, record, and report data to the Attorney General regarding incidents involving the use of firearms that did not result in bodily injury. The required data includes details such as the complaint number, date and time of the incident, location, statutory citation and degree of offenses charged, and whether the firearm was used lawfully or unlawfully. This reporting obligation applies to all relevant criminal complaints, regardless of the outcome of the case, and must be submitted quarterly for five years starting from January 1 following the bill's effective date.
Additionally, the Attorney General is tasked with compiling the collected data into a report to be submitted to the Governor and the Legislature at the end of the five-year period, which will also be made available on the Department of Law and Public Safety's website. This legislation is in response to a recommendation from the New Jersey State Commission of Investigation's report on illegal firearms use and trends, aiming to enhance the understanding and tracking of firearm-related incidents that do not result in bodily harm.
