The proposed bill establishes the Veterans Suicide Prevention Commission in New Jersey, aimed at assessing, supporting, and creating programs to facilitate the successful transition and reintegration of service members into civilian life, with a primary focus on preventing veteran suicides. The commission will coordinate efforts among various State agencies to effectively address the needs of the military community, conducting planning, research, education, training, and evaluation activities to enhance the systems of care and support available to veterans and their families.
The commission will consist of 13 members, including representatives from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, as well as appointees with relevant experience in mental health, substance abuse services, and community support for veterans. Members will serve four-year terms, with provisions for reappointment, and the commission is required to meet at least six times a year. It will also be responsible for issuing periodic reports on its strategic goals and progress, ensuring accountability and promoting collaboration among State, county, and local governments to enhance services for the military community.
