This bill allows the surviving spouse of a retired member of the Police and Firemen's Retirement System (PFRS) to enroll in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) and continue receiving pension benefits after remarriage under certain conditions. Specifically, it applies to surviving spouses of retired members who were receiving an accidental disability retirement allowance at the time of death, regardless of when the death occurred. The State will cover the annual premiums for health care benefits for the surviving spouse and any dependent children. Additionally, the bill stipulates that the State will bear any increased contributions to the retirement system required from employers other than the State due to the continuation of pension benefits after remarriage.

To qualify for these benefits, the surviving spouse must provide documentation approved by the Board of Trustees of the PFRS, showing that the injury leading to the disability or its complications significantly contributed to the retired member's death. Furthermore, the bill allows surviving spouses whose pensions were terminated due to remarriage before the bill's effective date to apply for reinstatement of their pension benefits, which would be payable from the date of their application.
