This bill amends P.L.2022, c.9 to extend certain provisions regarding the mandatory retirement age for police chiefs and fire department chiefs in New Jersey. Under the current law, members of the Police and Firemen's Retirement System (PFRS) who are serving as police or fire chiefs and will turn 65 during a specified period can remain in the system until they reach 67, provided they receive written approval from their appointing authority. The original timeframe allowed for this extension was until the end of the 24th calendar month following the effective date of P.L.2022, c.9, which is April 12, 2022.

The proposed amendment extends this timeframe from the 24th calendar month to the 48th calendar month following the effective date of P.L.2022, c.9. This means that police and fire chiefs who reach the age of 65 during this extended period will have the opportunity to continue serving until they are 67, subject to the same approval requirements. Additionally, the bill mandates that the Board of Trustees of the PFRS submit a report to the Governor and the Legislature on the effects of this extension on the retirement system within 30 days after the new deadline.
