This bill amends P.L.2022, c.9 to extend certain provisions regarding the mandatory retirement age for police and fire department chiefs. Under current law, members of the Police and Firemen's Retirement System (PFRS) must retire upon reaching the age of 65. However, the bill allows those who are serving as police or fire chiefs on the effective date of P.L.2022, c.9 and will turn 65 during the period from that effective date until the end of the 48th calendar month following it, to remain in the system until they reach 67 years of age, provided they receive written approval from the appointing authority for continued service.

Additionally, the bill requires the Board of Trustees of the PFRS to submit a report to the Governor and the Legislature within 30 days after the end of the 48th calendar month following the effective date of P.L.2022, c.9. This report will detail the number of members retained as chiefs, the duration of their service beyond age 65, and the impact of this extended service on the retirement system. The bill aims to provide more flexibility for police and fire chiefs regarding their retirement age while ensuring oversight through the mandated reporting.
